“Customer recommends” ads made with AI: what works and where the line is
Videos of someone talking to camera about a product are among the most successful ads. How to make them with AI fairly and legally. No fake reviews.
On social media today, ads that don't look like ads perform very well. Someone holds their phone, talks to camera about a product, shows it. It feels natural, like a recommendation from a friend. Marketers call this UGC: content in the style of everyday users. With AI, such videos can be made quickly. But there's an important line you need to know.
Why these ads work
- They feel trustworthy: a person talking to a person.
- They don't interrupt: they look like a normal post.
- They explain: they show how the product is used.
- They're cheap to produce compared with a commercial.
Three ways to create them
1. Real customers
The strongest and fairest option. You ask happy customers to film a short video. In exchange for a reward (a discount, a gift). The collaboration must then be labeled.
2. Content creators
You pay creators to film a video with your product. It must be clear that it's a paid collaboration: on social media it's labeled as an ad or paid partnership.
3. AI avatar
A video with an AI character talking about the product. Fast, cheap, and it can be produced in many versions and languages.
Where the line is
This is the most important part of the article. An AI avatar must not pretend to be a real customer.
It's fine to have:
- an AI avatar as the face of the brand explaining the product ("Let me show you how our window cleaner works"),
- an AI avatar labeled as AI-generated content,
- product demos, tutorials, comparisons.
It's not fine to have:
- an AI character claiming "I bought this and it changed my life" (that's a fake review),
- made-up experiences and results,
- a real person's face used without their consent.
Fake reviews and testimonials are banned in the EU as an unfair commercial practice. They risk fines and customers' trust. On top of that, platforms like Meta and TikTok require realistic AI-generated content to be labeled.
How to do it right
- Let real people tell real experiences.
- Use the AI avatar for explanations, demos and as the brand's face. Not for "testimonials".
- Label AI-generated content according to platform rules.
- Tell the truth about the product: no promises you can't keep.
Structure of a good video
- Hook: "This is the easiest way to…"
- Problem: what bothers people.
- Demo: the product in action.
- Reason to believe: guarantee, returns, real reviews.
- Call to action: "Link is below the video."
Summary
"Person talking to camera" videos are among the most effective ads. AI helps produce them fast and at scale. The line is clear: AI can explain and demonstrate, but it must not fake real customer experiences. We'll help you create fair and effective videos.
