Facebook and Instagram ads in 2026: why the ad content decides

Facebook and Instagram now find the audience on their own. What decides success is what you show in the ad. A simple explanation of what works and why.

A few years ago, Facebook ads meant carefully defining who should see them: women aged 25–40, living in London, interested in yoga. Today it works differently. The platform finds the audience itself, guided by what you show in the ad. That's why ad content (image, video, copy) matters more than ever.

Why it changed

Facebook and Instagram (both owned by Meta) now use artificial intelligence that watches who responds to an ad. When your yoga video resonates with women who work out at home, the system starts showing it to more people like them. You don't have to find them yourself.

This leads to a simple rule: the ad itself decides who it reaches. A different video reaches different people.

What this means for you

Instead of spending hours on audience settings, it pays to invest time in more, and more varied, ads:

  • different videos for different customers (beginner vs. advanced),
  • different reasons to buy (price, quality, speed, convenience),
  • different formats (short video, photo, carousel).

Each version finds its own audience. The ones that bring customers most cheaply keep running.

What works in ads today

  • The first 2 seconds. People scroll fast. The start of the video has to hook them immediately: with a question, a surprise or a result.
  • People and faces. A video of someone talking straight to camera feels more trustworthy than a polished spot.
  • The product in action. Not "we have a great vacuum", but a video of it pulling pet hair off a sofa.
  • Captions. Many people watch videos without sound.
  • A clear call to action. Say what to do: "Order with a discount until Sunday."

How many ads you need

More than you think. Ads "wear out" over time: the same people see them repeatedly and they stop working. Growing businesses add new ads regularly, ideally every week or two.

This is where AI helps a lot. It makes it possible to produce new videos and images in a fraction of the time and cost. More on that in AI videos for ads.

Don't forget people who've already shown interest

Someone who visited your website, added a product to the cart and left is your most valuable prospect. An ad can remind them what they were looking at. This is called remarketing (or retargeting), reaching people who already know you. It's usually the cheapest way to win an order.

Tracking is the foundation

For the platform to know whom to look for, it needs to know who bought. That's why your website needs a tracking code (Meta pixel) and ideally server-side tracking too. Without it, the system optimizes for clicks, not sales, and that's a big difference.

The most common mistakes

  • One ad running for months without change.
  • An overly narrow audience that ties the system's hands.
  • Missing purchase tracking.
  • Ads leading to the homepage instead of a specific product.
  • Switching ads off after two days, while the system is still learning.

Summary

On Facebook and Instagram today, the winner is whoever has the best and most varied ads, not the most complex setup. Add new videos and images regularly, track purchases and don't forget people who've already shown interest. We'll gladly help with both producing and managing your ads.
