How AI is changing online advertising, and where you still need a human
Google, Facebook and TikTok are now run by AI. What it does for you automatically, what it doesn't, and why a human still decides the outcome.
A few years ago, ads were managed by hand: people set click prices, audiences and ad schedules. Today, artificial intelligence does much of that directly inside Google, Facebook and TikTok. Does that mean anyone can run ads? Not quite. Let's look at what AI does well and where it needs a human.
What AI does for you today
- Sets the price per click. The platform decides how much to bid in the auction to get as many purchases as possible for your budget.
- Finds the audience. It watches who responds to the ad and shows it to similar people.
- Chooses placements. Search, YouTube, Instagram, stories. The platform tests where it works.
- Combines copy and images. It mixes several headlines and images into different versions and finds the best one.
All of this works surprisingly well if the platform has the right information.
Where AI needs a human
1. The right goal
AI optimizes for whatever you tell it. Tell it "I want clicks" and it brings clicks, even from people who'll never buy. A human has to set the goal as profitable purchases, not visits.
2. Quality tracking
AI learns from purchase data. If tracking is missing or broken, it learns the wrong things. Setting up and checking tracking is a human's job.
3. The ad content
AI can show your ad to the right people, but what's in it is up to a human. The offer, the story, the arguments, the video: that's the biggest difference today between ads that make money and ads that don't.
4. Business decisions
AI doesn't know you'll run out of stock next week, that one product has a higher margin, or that you want to push a new service. A human has to bring that into the campaigns.
5. A common-sense check
Automated systems sometimes do strange things: spend the budget on unsuitable websites or on searches that have nothing to do with you. They need regular checking.
The marketer's new role
A campaign manager used to be mainly a technician tweaking settings. Today it's more of a strategist and creative:
- sets the right goals and tracking,
- keeps supplying new images and videos,
- decides where to move the budget,
- evaluates what really makes money.
And here AI helps a second time, with content production. Thanks to it, we can create dozens of ad variants in a fraction of the time. More in AI videos for ads.
Summary
In advertising, AI takes over the technical work and does it well. But the result still depends on people: the right goal, quality tracking, a strong offer and good ads. The best results come from human + AI. That's exactly what our PPC service is built on.
