AI influencer: how to create a virtual character that earns money
What an AI influencer is, how to create one step by step, how to build an audience and what to watch out for with labeling and platform rules.
On Instagram and TikTok today you'll find characters with hundreds of thousands of followers who don't exist. They're AI influencers: virtual characters created with artificial intelligence. Some of them work with well-known brands. How is such a character made, and can you really earn money with one?
What an AI influencer is
An AI influencer is a fictional character with a consistent look, personality and story. It has its own profile, posts photos and videos and talks with followers. The difference from a regular creator is that the content is made with AI.
Step 1: A character with a story
What matters most isn't how the character looks, but who it is. Ask yourself:
- What's its name, age, hobbies?
- What does it talk about? (fitness, fashion, travel, tech, cooking)
- What's its personality? (funny, calm, cheeky, wise)
- Who is it for? (who will follow it)
A character without a story is just a pretty picture. A character with a story builds fans.
Step 2: A consistent look
The character must look the same every time: face, hair, body, signature style of clothing. This is technically the hardest part. What helps:
- creating a set of reference images of the character from different angles,
- using tools that can remember a character,
- consistently describing the same features.
Step 3: A content plan
Just like a real creator, you need regular content. Plan topics, formats and a calendar. See our guide to a 30-day content plan.
Step 4: Talking with followers
People follow characters they feel connected to. Reply to comments and messages in the character's voice. But be honest: if someone asks whether the character is real, don't deny it's AI.
Step 5: Labeling
This matters. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok require realistic AI-generated content to be labeled. EU rules (the AI Act) also introduce transparency obligations for artificially created content. In practice:
- state in the profile bio that it's an AI character,
- use the AI content label the platform offers,
- label paid collaborations as ads too.

Realistic expectations
An AI influencer isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. Building an audience takes months, just as it does for real creators. The advantage is that you produce content faster and cheaper. The downside is that some people don't trust AI characters. Success comes from a good story, consistency and honesty.
Summary
An AI influencer is a virtual character with a story, a consistent look and regular content. It can earn money much like a real creator if it has a clear niche, is labeled as AI and communicates honestly. Want to learn how? Join FLAI Creators Club. Want it done for you? Get in touch.
